Comunero’s square in Zipáquirá has been the scene of great national events, such as the comunero revolt in 1781 called by Don Juan Francisco de Berbeo, who led and initiated the march of the comuneros in Socorro Santander and intended to culminate in Santa Fé with the presentation of the list of community requirements.

A few kilometers from reaching their destination, negotiators sent by the viceroy stopped them in Zipaquirá and the Spanish crown promised to attend to the 35 requests set forth in the document, but the failure to comply with what was agreed gave an argument for the achievement of independence 29 years later.
